While shipments from Spain to the United States, the main export market, remain stable, the number of those to markets like China and Brazil continues to fall, as revealed by a report from iContainers on the development of maritime freight exports and imports.
The prices offered by the shipping companies operating the route that connects Spain with America remain at around 835 Euro for departures from Barcelona or Valencia, 880 Euro from Madrid and roughly 1,200 Euro from Bilbao.
Meanwhile, prices for Miami range from the 1,060 Euro for shipments departing from Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid to the more than 1,220 Euro of those departing from Bilbao.
Shipping companies offering container shipments to China registered drops of 22 Euro per container, while shipments to South America stood at around 75 Euro, bringing the average price slightly above 500 Euro, with the port of Santos being the cheapest for shipments from Spain.
According to the report, the sharp fall in the price of freight to China had a serious impact on the income of one of the most important shipping firms. In this context, an increase of close to 300% in freight transactions was registered in November.
The average price of freight to China stood at just under 820 Euro per container. In this sense, iContainers stresses that "it can be appealing for importers to agree on pre-negotiated fixed rates with the shipping companies."
