Ecuador considers it to be possible to increase exports of broccoli to Russia after Moscow imposed a ban on food imports from Turkey, said Sputnik Novosti, a source of the Commercial Office of Ecuador in Russia.

"From the list of agricultural products banned from Turkey, we have the highest potential with broccoli", the source said. On Monday, the Russian Government approved the ban on agricultural product imports from Turkey starting January 1, 2016.

The ban includes broccoli, citrus fruits, tomatoes, chicken and turkey, onion, cauliflower, cucumbers, grapes, apples, pears, apricots, peaches, plums, strawberries and salt.

Ecuador's Commercial Office recalled that "we increased our exports of frozen products, especially broccoli, after the sanctions Russia imposed on Europe."

Putin states Ecuador is reliable partner of Russia
Relations between Russia and Turkey deteriorated after the Turkish Air Force shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber over Syrian airspace.

On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered imposing financial restrictions against Turkey, particularly in the areas of trade, travel and employment.

Relations between Moscow and the West worsened due to the crisis in Ukraine and Crimea's accession to Russia in March 2014, which Western countries have described as an illegal annexation.

The EU and the US approved several packages of sanctions against Russia, which responded with a limitation on imports of food from the US, the EU, Australia, Canada, and Norway.
