Turkish fruit and vegetables are already suffering the impact of the Russian sanctions put in place after the shooting down of a Russian warplane by Turkey, reports the Turkish website dailysabah.com.
In just a few days, the prices of fruits and vegetables in Turkey have dropped by about 30 percent, says the chairman of the association of producers of frozen vegetables and fruits, Burhan Er.
According to him, prices will fall by about 50 percent, since supply has clearly increased after the announcement of the Russian sanctions and it now far exceeds the demand for fruits and vegetables in the country.
After the introduction of sanctions, 160 tonnes of Turkish products were sent back, as reported on Wednesday by the Turkish Agriculture Minister Faruk Çelik.
Despite the negative impact of a sudden crisis on prices, Er stated that sanctions will likely be lifted in the short term.
Because of reciprocal sanctions on agricultural products introduced by Russia and the EU last year, Russia relies heavily on food trade with Turkey. Consequently, he believes that Russia will have to restore imports in the near future.
