Before the end of 2016, the avocado orchards of the city of Zitacuaro will be certified so producers from the city can export and sell their products in international markets, said mayor Carlos Herrera Tello.

The mayor reiterated the government's commitment with all the parties involved in this process during a meeting with producers and members of the Municipal Board Plant Health to monitor progress of the actions to declare Zitacuaro as an area free of avocado pests. Herrera said the avocado was the best opportunity to create jobs.

Producers expressed their concerned about certifying their orchards so they could export to international markets.

Juan Macotela Garcia, treasurer of the Local Board of Plant Protection, thanked the major, on behalf of the producers, for adopting the avocado issue as his own.

At the meeting, the mayor presented working tools for the brigades that are already working along the municipality to certify that the gardens are free of pests, including six GPS devices, which serve to geotag each orchard. He also gave them working uniforms, footwear, fuel and office supplies.

The work includes an advertising campaign among avocado producers so that they participate in the certification process.
