Peruvian Hass avocado exports have registered a 306% growth in the Chilean market during the period between January and November 2015, reaching a total of $ 13.4 million compared to the 3.3 million achieved in the same period of 2014, reports the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur).
According to the Commercial Office of Peru in Santiago de Chile (OCEX), this growth has been due to the export of Hass avocados being done without any restrictions since July 2014, when the Santiago Court of Appeals rejected the appeals of protection requested by the Chilean Hass Avocado Committee, the Chilean Potato Association and some Mapuche communities because of fears from the spread of the sunblotch virus.
It is also the result of the intense promotional activities carried out in 2015 by the OCEX Santiago de Chile, inviting Chilean buyers like Bagno and major supermarket chains in the country to participate in major business platforms in Peru, such as the Macro Rueda Norte Exporta and Expoalimentaria.
Furthermore, the Peruvian presence as a supplier of fresh produce has been reinforced on platforms such as the PMA Fruittrade Latin America, with Peru present in the 2014 and 2015 editions, held in the city of Santiago de Chile.
