In December 2015, 30,986 tonnes of bananas were shipped by the Canary Islands to the Spanish mainland, while imports from Africa and Latin America amounted to 21,782 tonnes and re-exports to 6,538 tonnes. This means that Spanish consumers had about 46,230 tonnes of bananas at their disposal, which is 4,992 tonnes more than in the previous month (+12.1%). With these figures, the market share of imported bananas has fluctuated between a minimum of 33% and a maximum of 47%.
Between January and December 2015, the Canary Islands shipped 347,378 tonnes of bananas to the mainland, imports from Africa and Latin America amounted to 228,106 tonnes and re-exports reached 73,894 tonnes, so consumers had about 501,590 tonnes at their disposal. This is 7,838 tonnes more than last year (+1.6%). With these figures, the market share of imported bananas in 2015 ranged from a minimum of 31% to a maximum of 45%.
The main suppliers of imported bananas in December were Ivory Coast, with 4,608 tonnes, Colombia, with 3,899 tonnes and Costa Rica, with 3,876 tonnes; the three accounted for 57% of the total volume. Moreover, Ivory Coast with 4.0 million Euro, Colombia, with 1.9 million, and Cameroon and Costa Rica, with 1.8 million Euro, were the leading suppliers in terms of value, accounting for more than 65% of the total.
