During the opening of the BIOFACH in Nuremberg the German Association of Organic Food (BÖLW) published the growth figures of the organic trade. The market volume was 8.62 billion Euro and the revenue increased by more than 10% in 2015.

The BÖLW states furthermore that this increase in growth was achieved in all distribution channels (organic supermarkets, health food stores, bakeries, and mail order). And the full potential hasn’t been reached yet.

Elke Röder, manager of the German Association of Organic Processors, Wholesalers and Retailers announced the excellent growth figures of organic retailers and emphasizes their importance in the increasing German organic trade. Röder states: “Without the positive role and the vision of the Organic Association a revenue higher than 8.5 billion Euro would not have been possible. This is mostly due to two main reasons; in the first place specialized organic stores always aim to achieve improvements of the standards and requirements, this leads to unique quality standards that no other company can meet. And in the second place our stores have a clearly differentiated profile compared to other supermarkets. This leads to a benchmark to which all others have to be compared. For years this has created a dynamic situation that moved the entire organic trade, and especially the specialized organic stores, forward.”

The excellent achievements of some companies, organized in the BNN were recently honored with various awards. For instance the prestigious German Sustainability award has been awarded to the companies Ulrich Walter and Bohlsener Mill. Furthermore the soap and cleaning products producer Sonett received the Sustainability Award of the International Bodensee conference, the founder of SODASAN, Jürgen Hack, received the B.A.U.M. Environment Prize 2015 and SuperBioMarkt as well as the Bohlsener Mill were awarded a large award for the retailers. The sustainable achievements of the BNN members are shown in the exhibition Sustainable Organic! (Hall 9, Stand 551). Since 2014 the BNN campaign informs consumers of the exceptional projects in organic stores. More information is available on the website and in the FreitagExtra.
