In order to ensure the safe consumption of agricultural products in the future, Beijing will start a pilot test this year, of a traceability system for large vegetable wholesale markets, 300 vegetable specialty shops and 300 direct supply stores.

Beijing Municipal Commission of Commerce has been making many efforts towards implementing a food safety project, a safety traceability system for pork was implemented last year, which suggests that all the pork packaging will have a 20-digits bar code. A special scan device will be installed in each market. Simply by scanning the digital code, consumers will immediately know all the following bits information: whether the pork has been slaughtered, how it is circulated and where the safety and quality testing is conducted.

The same principle now applies to all the vegetables in Beijing. With this QR code, consumers can trace where the vegetables are produced, whether the pesticide residue is compliant with safety standards etc. In the future, all the markets, supermarkets stores, especially chain stores will implement one access system (such as certificate of origin, safety detection certificate) for meat and vegetables.
