The severe tropical cyclone Winston caused losses for many farmers in the Western Division; the subsequent shortage of produce has led to prices soaring, with most farmers charging double the usual price.
Some farmers are said to have taken advantage of the situation, increasing produce prices to market vendors who say they have no choice but to also increase their selling price.
"Previously I used to buy one container of tomatoes for $25, but now I am buying it for $50," said Ba market vendor Vishwar Nadan.
The agriculture ministry is attempting to help farmers get back on track by providing seedlings and young coconut plants.
The rehabilitation program was launched at the Nakorotubu District School in Ra on Wednesday 2 March.
"Everything we rely on to sell in the market has been damaged by the cyclone. Our cassava, breadfruit and even the mango trees which are one of our main sources of income has been destroyed,'' said Joeli Nacama, a resident.
