At the moment, the market for white mushrooms is stable, according to Tonny Hooijmans of OkeTrading from Velddriel in the Netherlands. The trader says the prospects for the coming weeks are good. "There is sufficient demand for Easter, and several supermarkets have promotions planned again. The quality of the mushrooms is reasonable, but not super, due to the strongly varying compost."
"Sales of oyster mushrooms have been good in recent weeks, and the prospects for the coming weeks are good as well. The chestnuts are coming from a low point, but they're at a stable level now. In the near future, I'm expecting a price increase as a result of the growing demand. The market for Portobellos was and is stable, but here I'm also expecting a strong increase in demand and price," Tonny goes on to say.
For Dutch mushroom cultivation, he says, things are not looking too good. "The competition from Poland isn't getting any less, and the way things are now, competition will even increase in the coming year. The Dutch growers are working around cost price now. That means this past year and the next they're not making any money, and one has to wonder the way it will go then," Tonny concludes.
