According to information reported by CNN Arabic, the price of onions in Morocco has reached record levels of between 13 and 15 dirhams (between 1.3 and 1.5 dollars) per kilo, both in popular markets and supermarkets. In normal circumstances, onions usually cost between 2.5 and 5 dirhams (between 0.26 and 0.51 dollars), so the increase has naturally led to a reduction in purchases.
The Ministry of Agriculture of Morocco did not announce the reasons behind this rise; however, CNN Arabic found out from various sources that the most likely causes have been the impact of drought and severe cold temperatures and the monopoly of some suppliers and exporters. These, among other factors, have allegedly reduced the country's available stocks.
