The price of watermelons dropped sharply at the Berlin wholesale market, states a Berlin-based wholesaler and importer. “The entire market is flooded with watermelons. The products that went for 1.50 Euro yesterday only cost 70 cents today,” explains the expert of the current situation.
The reason for the drop in prices is the sudden increased offer of watermelons. “In one day the supply exploded,” says the trader, “When I arrived at work pallets with watermelons were everywhere. The previous day traders only had 10 to 20 crates of watermelons because they were so expensive. Now the melons are flooding the place and we are selling the product for 60 to 80 cents. A complete collapse of the prices.”
According to the expert the quality of products is all right. “The new batches come from Costa Rica. The previous offers came from Costa Rica and Brazil, but those supplies were limited and expensive,” continues the fruit wholesaler, “Probably someone in Hamburg received a few containers and now floods the market with watermelons.”
