The damage that cyclone Winston caused to farms in the hinterlands of Nadhari, Ba, has affected the supply of vegetables both to the local markets and to export companies. This is one of the problems faced by the seven-member Chand family of Nadhari, Ba.

A team from The Fiji Times came across 18-year-old Divnesh Chand using bullocks to plough a piece of land and get it ready for replanting.

"This was previously our watermelon farm, which was destroyed during the cyclone," the Year 13 Khalsa College student said.

"Apart from watermelon, we also used to plant things like long bean and corn. All of that have been destroyed."

The family normally supply to vendors at the Ba market and Maqere Exports. Over the past few weeks, they have struggled to meet the increasing demands for vegetables.

"Exports have really been affected since the cyclone because all our produce was destroyed. We are trying to plant again but we haven't received any support in the form of seedlings.''

Mr Chand said his family estimated damage at the farm to be about $12,000.
