The average price at origin of tomatoes fifteen years ago, taking all varieties into account, was 124.07 percent higher than today, despite the increased costs, according to a report based on data from the Prices and Markets Observatory of the Andalusian Government.
Looking at the period from January to March, the average price of tomatoes in 2002 amounted to 1.21 Euro per kilo. In the same period of 2016, this price stood at 0.54 Euro/kilo.
If we look at full calendar years, the average price in 2002 reached 1.02 Euro per kilo, while in 2015 it has amounted to 0.62 €/kilo. That is, in 2002, tomatoes were 64.52 percent more expensive than last year.
A considerable decrease is observed also if we look at campaigns, even taking into account the provisional nature of the current data, which is not over yet. In the 2001/2002 campaign, the average price for all tomato varieties reached 1.09 Euro, 84.75 percent more than in the current season, which has stood so far at 0.59 Euro per kilo.
