The melons purchased from Spain by the Netherlands are re-sold in the European Union (EU) for almost twice the price paid to Spanish exporters, according to data from the statistical service Euroestacom (ICEX-Eurostat).
Based on the data supplied by that statistical service, with code 080719 (fresh melons) of the Integrated Tariff of the European Communities (TARIC), the Kingdom of the Netherlands sold 105,880,000 of kilos of melons last year to the EU at a price of 1.01 Euro per kilo. In the same period, it imported 195.6 million kilos for an average of 0.77 Euro/kilo, buying 45.23 million kilos from Spain for 0.563 Euro per kilo, 79.49 million kilos from Brazil for 0.74 Euro/kilo, 32.98 million kilos from Costa Rica for 0.845 €/kilo and 20.03 million kilos from Honduras for 1.134 Euro per kilo. These countries, as its main suppliers, provided 90.86 percent of the melons imported by the Netherlands.
In 2015, the EU broke the all-time record of melon imports, with a volume of 974.91 million kilos worth 825.42 million Euro, at an average price of 0.847 Euro per kilo.
Of the 10 largest suppliers of melons to the EU, the best price was obtained by France, with an average of 1.491 Euro per kilo, followed by Honduras, with 1.123 Euro per kilo, Morocco, with 1.063 Euro, the Netherlands, with 1.011 Euro and Germany, with 0.997 Euro per kilo. Melons from Spain, which accounted for the largest volume, were sold at an average price of 0.703 Euro per kilo.
Suppliers
By countries, the world's leading supplier of melons to the EU has been Spain, with 371.98 million kilos, 38.16 percent of the total. Of all the Spanish melons sold in the EU, 53.6 percent came from Murcia, 20.24 percent from Almeria and 7.31 percent from Valencia.
The value of Spanish melon sales to the EU reached 261.53 million Euro, with an average price of 0.703 Euro per kilo.
Brazil ranks second, with 200.46 million kilos, for which the country received 154.12 million Euro, with an average price of 0.769 Euro per kilo. Brazilian melon sales accounted for 20.56 percent of the total EU purchases.
These two countries account for most of melons sold in the EU, with 58.72 percent, i.e., 6 out of 10 melons consumed in EU territory have been supplied by Spain or Brazil; 4 by Spain and 2 by Brazil.
The third largest supplier is the Netherlands, with 105.88 million kilos of melons (10.86%) worth 107.05 million Euro, and an average price of 1.011 Euro per kilo. At this point, it is worth noting that the Netherlands imported 195.6 million kilos, of which 45.23 million kilos were purchased from Spain and 79.49 million kilos from Brazil.
