Recently, data from the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics shows that from early 2016, the price of Chinese cabbage increased from 4.6 Yuan/kilo to 10.26 Yuan/kilo. Meanwhile, cabbage growers has stated that they barely are receiving a return on their investments.
Before being sold at retail markets, cabbage are locally bought and transported over long distances. After having gone through first, second and, at times, third layers of retailers and wholesalers, prices can have increased by 200% to 250%.
In addition, retailers started to stock up available cabbage. Extreme cold in January has affected production of cabbage, which is affecting prices. Relatively cool Spring weather has not changed this yet.
