Avocado sales in the UK are up 30% Year on Year and and supply cannot keep up with demand. At the moment there are Spanish, Israeli and Moroccan avocados available which have been good quality through the season, according to Steve Maxwell, CEO at Worldwide Fruit.

"There are also some early Peruvian avocados around but the quality is lacking at the moment. Peruvian and South African avocados are on the water and will arrive in a couple of weeks. Prices are high, higher than last year at this time, and will remain so until the main volumes start to arrive," explains Steve.

"Five years ago we could not have imagined that the avocado market would be so bouyant and that is not just in the UK but in many other countries as well."

The exchange rate is working against UK importers at the moment, the pound is low against the Euro and US Dollar, which makes it even tighter.

He does not think there will be any advantage seen when the South African fruit arrives despite the low Rand as it is a seller's market.
