Nestle India has launched a new range of Greek Yogurt under the brand name NESTLÉ a+ GREKYO.

The products, which are available in several variants such as mango, pineapple, strawberry, and orange, are mainly targeted at Indian consumers.

The new range of Greek Yogurt is positioned as a healthy snack with low fat and real fruit bits. It is claimed to have 70% more protein and calcium as compared to 'NESTLÉ a+ Nourish Toned Dahi'.

Nestlé India dairy general manager Arvind Bhandari said: "We have introduced this product for the first time in India. A perfect blend of health and indulgence, NESTLÉ a+ GREKYO has a rich and creamy texture coupled with real fruit bits.

"Globally the Greek Yoghurt category came into prominence less than a decade back and in certain countries it has already captured a major share of the entire Yoghurt market.

"In India, this category is still at a nascent stage but we are confident that Nestlé will lead the global trend for the Indian consumers soon."

NESTLÉ a+ GREKYO has been introduced in the country's capital Delhi NCR region retailing at Rs 30 per 100g. It will be available in other major cities soon.

With this new brand addition, Nestle India is aiming to improve its dairy portfolio which includes NESTLÉ a+ Dahi, NESTLÉ a+ Milk, MILKMAID and EVERYDAY Dairy Whitener.

Nestle India claims to have partnered with around 100,000 milk farmers in the Indian states of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. The latest move by the Swiss company is part of its efforts to shift focus to new products to reduce its dependence on Maggi noodles, which accounted for 30% of its total sales in 2014, reported Livemint.com.

In the next few quarters, Nestle intends to launch products across dairy, chocolate and confectionery segments.

Nestle has been embroiled in the Maggi controversy since last year ,when the country's food regulator Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) banned the sale and production of Maggi on 5 June, due to excessive presence of monosodium glutamate and lead in samples of the product. Nestle was prevented from selling the product for six months after the ban.
