500 tonnes of fruit and vegetables from the market-place in the Bulgarian municipality of Parvenets, near Plovdiv, were inspected in a day by the National Revenue Agency (NRA). The action, carried out with assistance from the police, was intended to tackle tax evasion and monitor perishable goods, such as fruit and vegetables.
34 vehicles were stopped at the entrance to the venue to check the supporting documents certifying the origin and quantity of the products. As a result, two fines were imposed totalling 13,500 Lev (almost 7,000 Euro) due to discrepancies between the documents submitted to the tax authority and the actual volumes of fruits and vegetables found in the trucks. Two further sanctions were imposed because of a lack of supporting documents and non-cooperation.
In parallel, tax inspectors checked 49 retailers and producers inside the wholesale market, which resulted in 16 fines, mainly due to fiscal infractions and the non-issuance of receipts.
