Starting this week, fruit operators in Thailand, who wish to export their products abroad, are required to apply for permits issued by the National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards.

From 4th May, fruit exporters are to have their goods fumigated by certified operators. Doojduan Sasanavin, Secretary General of the National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards explained that the objectives are to ensure food safety and strengthen confidence among importing countries.

In addition to opting for certified fumigation factories, fruit exporters will also have to register to receive export licenses. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives will carry out regular inspections to make sure all fruit exporters comply with the rules.

The National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards has so far issued licenses to 156 fruit distributors in the North and 57 others in the central region and the East. The country in 2014 exported longan and lychees worth over eight billion baht.
