Georgia peach growers are poised to start this year's season later this month, which would put the start date about two weeks earlier than usual. Until then, domestic supplies of peaches are coming from Florida.
“We haven't quite started with peaches in Georgia,” noted Robert Wilhelm with Bova Fresh, “but we'll start here in a couple of weeks.”
Though Wilhelm isn't involved in the Florida deal, he noted that the fruit he's seen on the market right now is of excellent quality. He expects the same for Georgia fruit later this month, owing in part to good conditions during the offseason.
“Everyone's quality this year looks like it will be outstanding,” he said. “That's because of good chill hours and good weather.”
