The Danish onion season is going well. The harvest for shallots started two weeks ago, with early onion varieties set to start next week. According to a major Danish wholesaler, only domestic onions are available on the market from now until October/November.
Average production is expected, if not slightly better than last year. However, a Danish grower we contacted said that it wouldn't be anything for the record books.
The season started earlier than usual due to warm weather conditions and rain, with reports of perfect quality.
The shallots are typically packed in 300g bags for consumers and sent out in 5 to 10 kg bags for the wholesale market.
The onions destined for export are put in storage until the new year, the start of the export season. Most of the onions are sent in big bags to Southern Europe, Germany and the Czech Republic.
