According to news released by The Center for Food Safety (CFS) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), a sample of hairy crabs from Hubei province in China mainland had been found containing carcinogenic dioxin. And there was doubt that the sample origin was in Jiangsu province. Some crabs retailers said that since the beginning of this month, crabs were detected excessive dioxin content, and their business suffered a big blow.

The Center stated that they strengthened its sample test of hairy crab. A total of 6 samples were chosen to be tested, 3 imported products and 3 retail products. One crab sample from Xiantao, Hubei province was found containing 5 times dioxin more than safety level.

After primary investigation, the sample was extremely similar to the contagious sample selected from farms in Tai Lake, Jiangsu earlier this month, whose product was prohibited from entry because of the dioxin problem.

It’s reasonable for the Center to doubt that the crab was from Jiangsu province and would investigate that whether the retailer has substituted contaminated products for the safe products and whether he falsified related documents.

According to the retailer, he suffered a huge loss in business but wasn’t willing to say exact money he lost.
