Ecuador's biggest and most significant pitahayas campaign is about to begin. 65% of the country's total annual production is harvested between December and April, so producers and traders have been making forecasts. Mayra Guanin, from Frutas Nanky spoke about the current situation: "So far, this year's campaigns have not disappointed us, so we have great expectations for this upcoming production."

Even though the continuous rains during the second half of the year caused many problems, the climate helped producers to recover their losses quickly. "We've had many hours of light and enough rainfall in recent months, which is what this fruit needs. The quality has been higher than in other seasons. Thus, we believe the next season will be one of the best seasons in recent years," said the spokeswoman.

Last week, China's President, Xi Jinping, visited Ecuador in order to strengthen the economic relations between both countries. This is the first time a Chinese president has visited Ecuador. The Ecuadorian President highlighted the excellent state of bilateral relations between his country and China in a speech. He also said that this visit sealed "a comprehensive strategic partnership and the highest level of collateral relationships that China has with any country in the world."

These statements have increased the producer's expectations regarding the opening of the Chinese market for exotic products. "Chinese consumers are accustomed to pitahaya that has similar characteristics to the Ecuadorian fruit, so this would be a very big market opportunity for us," concluded Guanin.
