One day after the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets issued a consumer warning about Phil Am Smoked Mackerel, the company has voluntarily recalled the product. The product is uneviscerated. The viscera in fish can contain Clostridium botulinum spores that can cause serious illness and death. No illnesses have been reported to date.
The recalled product is Phil-am Smoked Mackerel (Hasa-Hasa) in a 200 gram (7.05 ounce) pack. It is packaged in a clear flexible plastic pouch and has a predominantly red tag on the top seal with the product information. The UPC code is 814487015147. It was distributed to stores in New Jersey, New York, Georgia, and Pennsylvania between February and November 2016.
If you purchased this product, do not eat it. Throw it away in a sealed container or take it back to the store where you bought it for a full refund.
