According to the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), between January and October 2016, Mexican shipments of fresh tomatoes amounted to 1.742 million dollars, i.e. 15% more than in the previous year.

SAGARPA stated that the sale of this vegetable increased by more than 200 million dollars in one year, and that it had ranked second in the top 20 food product exports, preceded only by beer.

Fresh tomato exports accounted for 7.6% of total food exports and 14.68% of agricultural exports in that period, the authorities stated.

November's preliminary report highlights a 68% increase in shipments abroad, compared with the same month last year.

Between January and November 2016, Mexico produced 2,550,000 tons of tomatoes, i.e. 7.1% more than in the same period of 2015.

The main producing states are: Sinaloa, San Luis Potosi, Baja California, Michoacan, and Jalisco, which together account for 1.3 million tons, i.e. 50.8% of the national total.
