Advanced Fresh Concepts (AFC) of California is recalling its Edamame (soybeans) because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. This contamination was discovered via random testing under AFC’s Quality Assurance Program.

The products were packaged by AFC Franchisees and sold, under refrigeration, in 8.0 ounce (227 gram) packages, identified as “Edamame – Soybeans in Pods.” This product was sold at designated retail sushi counters within grocery stores, cafeterias, and corporate dining centers in these states: AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, ME, MI, MN, MS, NC, NH, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WA, and WY.

Check with the store where you purchased this product to see if it is part of the recall. If you did buy it, throw it away in a sealed garbage can so other people and animals can’t eat it, or take it or the receipt back to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Then wash your fridge with a mild bleach solution to kill any remaining bacteria. Listeria can grow at refrigerator temperatures. Wash your hands well after handling this product.

If you ate this recalled product, monitor yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant women may only have mild flu-like symptoms, but this illness can cause stillbirth, miscarriage, premature labor, and fetal infection. If you do feel sick, see your doctor.
