Indian food industry
Kumar said, “The Indian food and beverage industry is a backbone and sunrise sector of the country’s economy. It has never seen a negative trend and offers immense employment generation opportunities.”
About 40 per cent of India’s 1.25-billion strong population is under 30. This makes it one of the youngest and most vibrant countries in the world.
The culture, urbanisation, latest trends, education and hospitals are catalysts in shifting about 30 per cent of the population towards the urban areas, and thus creating big opportunities for the convenience, healthy, fast and fusion food sectors to grow by over 30 per cent.
Make in India, the Narendra Modi government’s flagship initiative, has provided an impetus to the overall industry, especially to the food manufacturing and processing sectors by providing attractive business opportunities to the investors.
The government of India’s initiatives to improve the country’s food processing sector include the following:
The establishment of a dairy processing infrastructure fund worth Rs 8,000 crore ($1.2 billion)
Proposal for 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) through the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) route in the marketing of food products produced and manufactured
Twenty-five lakh metric tonne of cold storage capacity
The sanctioning of 100 new cold chain projects
The completion of 44 integrated cold chain projects
The setting up of 168 new food testing laboratories projects
The establishment of 41 mega food parks at an allocated investment of Rs 98 billion
These, and many others, are expected to give a boost to the business morale in this sector.
