Carrefour is moving forward in the development of its digital blockchain technology. After implementing it in its Auvergne chickens last March, now it has decided to put it into practice in a new line of products: Carrefour Quality Line tomatoes.
"It is an innovation designed to guarantee transparency and traceability, which will help Carrefour lead the food transition for all," explained the French multinational.
For the marketing of this tomato variety, Carrefour is collaborating with the cooperative Les Paysans de Rougeline, supporting local, innovative and sustainable agriculture, since they do not use herbicides for their production.
The blockchain technology is already in use with Auvergne chickens, providing consumers with total traceability, from the moment the chickens are born until they are placed on supermarket shelves.
Its operation is based on the use of QR codes, which are included in the product label and which consumers can scan using their smartphones. This will provide them information about the tomato, such as the place where it was grown, the name of the producer, the cultivation methods or the date of planting.
Producers can also resort to the technology to show their local experience and demonstrate their commitment to a better form of agriculture.
