Plastic packaging at the sausage counter at EDEKA could soon be a thing of the past: In Büsüum, in Schleswig-Holstein, customers can now buy reusable cans to have them filled at the fresh food counter. The cans come in different sizes and cost between 4 and 5 euros. Of course, these costs will no longer apply to your next purchase. For the return of the 'old' can, customers will receive a new, clean one for free. The used cans are then mechanically cleaned on site.

However, the transition remains voluntary for both markets and customers. The independent sites can individually decide on the project and disposable packaging will continue to be available everywhere.

There is already a similar offer in Osnabrück where customers can bring their own packaging, which is then placed on a tray on the scale and filled by the employees of the counter without touching the can. Customers seal the can themselves, so the method is hygienic. Again, there is the possibility to buy cans locally, if you have none of your own.

Mechthild Möllenkamp, the owner of the branch in Osnabrück, talks about the initial skepticism of the customers. "In the meantime, the offer is well received," says Möllenkamp. "But still, the proportion of customers using the offer is only about 10 percent."

The entrepreneur wants to continue her pioneering work in sustainability in the future. Although the fruit and vegetables already have the option to dispense with plastic, the salad bar still needs improvement.

She is not averse to the idea of reusable plastic cans if you should meet her with a good offer. Until that happens, she continues to stick to her method.
Depending on the resonance at the test site, the system could be introduced nationwide.
