 The Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers’ Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, has released the 2017-18 third advance estimates of the area and production of horticulture crops, which are 2,56,62,000 hectare and 30,68,18,000 tonne, respectively. These estimates are based on the information received from different states and Union Territories (UTs) in India.
 
The following table summarises the All-India final third advance estimates for 2016-17 and 2017-18.

Highlights
The third advance estimates for horticulture crops, have been prepared on the basis of information received from the state departments of horticulture/agriculture and various agencies like the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development (DASD), the Directorate of Cashew and Cocoa Development (DCCD) and the National Bee Board (NBB).

The main highlights of horticulture scenario in 2017-18 are as under:

The total horticulture production of the country was estimated to be 306.8 million tonne (MT) in 2017-18, which was 2.05 per cent higher than the previous year and 8.5 per cent higher than the past five years’ average production

The production of fruits is estimated to be about 97 MT, which is 4.5 per cent higher than previous year

The production of vegetables is estimated to be about 179.7 MT, which is about one per cent higher than the previous year

Onion production in the current year is likely to be around 220 lakh tonne as against 224 lakh tonne in 2016-17, which is six per cent higher than the last five years’ average

Potato production was estimated at 485 lakh tonne as against 486 lakh tonne in 2016-17, which is about five per cent higher than the last five years’ average production

Tomato production in the current year is likely to be around 194 lakh tonne as against 207 lakh tonne in 2016-17, which is about three per cent higher than the last five years’ average production
