India’s Majerhat bridge in Kolkata, which was important to the movement of Nepalese goods through the Port of Kolkata, collapsed on September 06. The news created serious concerns in Nepal, as the country’s shipping imports are predominantly coming in via this port.
“We are worried. Almost all of Nepal’s imports are routed through this port. The collapse of the bridge is definitely going to impact movement of goods,” stated Eaknarayan Aryal, Consul General of Nepal in Kolkata.

The collapse of the bridge has led to the closure of all traffic on the Diamond Harbor Road. The bridge itself also was a key part of the Kolkata Dock Complex, witnessing nearly 1,300 trucks coming and going each day.
Nepalisansar.com quoted a Kolkata Port Trust official as saying: “KoPT [Kolkata Port Trust] has dealt with 80,000 containers just for Nepal in 2017-18. This is supposed to go up to 100,000 this year. There may be some problems in the movement of traffic. However, we are working with the police and local administration to find alternative routes.”
