The capital of India has the world’s most toxic air and this Wednesday, the rising concentrations of harmful pollutants led to an Air Quality Index “red”.

With the air quality fluctuating between ‘poor to very poor’ , there were still fresh cases of stubble burning in the rice bowl belt that stretches between the cities of Karnal and Kurukshetra, in the neighbouring state of Haryana.

As reported by The Pioneer, Karnal, Nilokheri, Indri, Nissing , Assandh and Gharaund are the areas where 189 new incidents of stubble burning have been reported by the Haryana Agriculture Department and Central Pollution Control Board.

While the central government is imposing many fines on the farmers, last year, 4,343 cases of stubble burning were reported. The government now wants to encourage farmers to go for maize cultivation instead of growing rice.

“We are encouraging farmers to opt for vegetable and maize cultivation. Cultivation of maize will help in combating air pollution factors,” said Aditya Dabas , Deputy Director of the Haryana Agriculture Department.
