The Spanish branch of Polymer Logistics, a Dutch manufacturer of returnable boxes and pallets, has launched a new foldable and reusable container specially designed for the supply chain of plantains and bananas. For some time now, the company has been immersed in different R&D&I projects to cover the specific needs that of different sub-sectors of the agricultural sector.
At the express request of important banana producers, the company worked to develop a specific container for this fruit that would overcome the main problems the industry faced with the use of single-use containers. They mainly focused on three problems: the high cost derived from the continuous acquisition of single-use containers; the problems related to the maturation of the product; and the losses caused by the lack of robustness of the container.
After an exhaustive research performed in close collaboration with different producers, Polymer Logistics presented a new packaging that has the following advantages: improvement of the folding ratio to achieve greater savings in reverse logistics; a robust and smooth design in its inside that guarantees the protection of the product; wide lateral accesses to access the content and easily tear the primary container, if necessary, to facilitate the fruit's ripening process; a stacking system developed to avoid friction that may damage the content; and a closing system fully integrated to the box to achieve greater robustness and content protection during transport.
