Sales of organic vegetables and organic fruits in the retail sector are growing strongly. Most popular are carrots and tomatoes as well as bananas and apples. From September 2017 to August 2018, sales of organic vegetables in the retail trade increased by 7 percent, as reported by the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG).

In the same period, however, sales of conventional vegetables decreased by 3 percent. The top-selling organic vegetables are tomatoes, carrots and hot peppers. The share of organic retail sales amounts to 15 percent for vegetables.

Organic diversity is increasing
For organic fruits, sales increased 13 percent from September 2017 to August 2018, while sales of conventional fruits grew by just 1 percent. The highest-yielding organic fruits are bananas, apples and lemons. The quantitative organic share in the retail trade amounts to 12 percent for fruit. According to BLW, the biodiversity on the shop shelf has increased. Nowadays, the organic fruit range is as varied as the conventional fruit assortment.
