How the exterior of fruits and vegetables look is very important in China, it directly influences how well the product sells. An important part of this exterior is the label on the products. “Nowadays there's a trend for fruits and vegetables with a label to be viewed as better quality fruits by Chinese customers. Having a label on your fruits and vegetables thus gradually became a symbol of high quality and big brand.“ Said Emily of Sinclair.

Sinclair is a company that provides service, advice and machines to help companies produce their own labels. The machines are rented to customers and Sinclair provides all service and maintenance. They are an international company and also have an office in China and their label business has developed over the years, as Emily explains: “We first had our label business in China for apples. Nowadays our customers are mainly for kiwifruit and orange labels. The volume's increased faster in recent years because more and more people in China pay attention to high quality food i.e. safety and organic. Having a label on your product can help to gain more trust from Chinese customers, because as mentioned earlier, they see it as a symbol of high quality.”

Sinclair has different kind of labels and options for all kind of products and they help companies to find the best solution for their type of product. “We have the tab-lift label, which is usually used on fruits like apples, as people can peel the label easily and eat the skin. Though we also provide the non-tab labels, which are widely used on most of the commodities. Nowadays more and more of our partners would like to add barcodes or 2D codes on their labels to have more interactions with consumers. This is another trend which is currently taking place in the label business.”

Sinclair is using food-safe materials and works with the highest food safety standards. In India the food labels are currently banned by the government, because so many bad quality labels were on the market which influenced the health of the people. “There are a lot bad labels on the market in China as well. These are mostly much cheaper, so it is more profitable to do, but they are very bad for customers’ health. We maintain high standards and keep a close look at food safety and on our ecological footprint, since we also want to make sure to produce as less waste as possible. For us the quality matters.”
