French organic vegetables from unheated greenhouses available in March

The producers of MediTerraBio grow zucchinis on 6 hectares, with a plan to produce 360 tons this year, 0.5 hectare of peas for 5 tons, 1 hectare of beans for 30 tons, 1.5 hectare of artichokes (purple and green) for 30 tons and 5 tons of turnips.

“MediTerraBio has always relied on early production, its specialty. Since the creation of MediTerraBio in 2009, ProNatura has accompanied the association's producers in the marketing of their vegetables.” This season will last 2 months, gradually giving way to the open field production.

The Provence, an ideal land for vegetable production
“The producers of MediTerraBio benefit from a land with exceptional and ideal characteristics for these crops,” which are irrigated directly with water from the Alps and benefit from an optimal sunshine rate throughout the year. “The southernmost regions are particularly suited for the early production of zucchinis and beans, thanks to the mild coastline and the heat stored by the pebble soil during the day.”

“Efficient” production techniques, ensured by daily monitoring
“In order to produce without heating, simple but efficient techniques are used, such as the installation of thermal sails to protect the crops and the use of black or brown mulches that warm the soil. The crops are also monitored daily to anticipate the harvest and deliver the vegetables on the day of the harvest to the ProNatura site in Cavaillon. The vegetables are then shipped to organic stores, where they are available for sale on the day following the harvest.”
