"The price of ginger this year is very high, which is mainly due to the heavy rainfall in the main producing areas in 2018, resulting in a decline in total ginger production in China. In addition, too much rain also affects the quality of ginger. Therefore, the price of quality ginger is higher than normal, and the export price also rose accordingly. Higher prices have spurred farmers to produce more ginger for the next season, and production is expected to increase next year. In Europe they import Peruvian ginger as well, though their volumes are really small compared to China, so that is not a lot of competition for us.” said Mr. Wenjun Zhao from Anqiu Luxing Food Co., Ltd.
“We export our ginger to Europe, America and the Middle East, though our biggest market is Europe. We do not experience any difficulties with exporting to America, even though a lot of products attract extra high tariffs because of the tariff war between China and America, but not for our products. The reason is probably because ginger is a basic ingredient for American people to cook with, so the government does not put higher tariffs on that product because so many people need it.”
“Currently we are selling our ginger but we have not started with sowing yet. I estimate we will start sowing seeds within three months from now. We have different packagings for our ginger: 5 kilograms, 10 kilograms and 13 kilograms. The most popular sizes we sell in Europe are 5 and 13 kilograms.” mentioned Mr. Zhao.
