China's Ministry of Commerce announced that a food tracking system for 86,000 companies and 524,000 traders had been established in 58 large and small Chinese cities across the country.

The tracking system covers meat, including pork and beef, and more than 500 kinds of vegetables, some fruits, fish and seafood, said Gao Feng, a spokesperson for the Ministry, adding that this system will help guarantee food safety for consumers.

Gao said that the Chinese government has been keen to increase the supply of meat and vegetables as the traditional Chinese Spring Festival approaches.

He also said that the market monitoring mechanism will be put into use during the Spring Festival. Thus, the Government will immediately intervene if any major price fluctuations or food shortages are detected. The objective is to ensure adequate food availability.
