Jujube exported to Denmark & Middle East markets

Core Tip: The commercial cultivation of jujube, locally known as ‘kul’ or ‘boroi’, is increasing every year.
The commercial cultivation of jujube, locally known as ‘kul’ or ‘boroi’, is increasing every year. Its export to Denmark and several Middle Eastern counties is expected to begin soon. Different varieties of jujube are cultivated in the district. The popular varieties include Baukul, Apelkul, Narkelkul, Bilatikul, Ninety and Mistikul.

Additional deputy director at Satkhira Agricultural Expansion Department Amzad Hossain:  “There had been negotiations with exporters to export jujube to different countries this year. The export is expected to begin soon once the jujube becomes mature.”

Rafikul Islam, a farmer of South Sonabaria village of Kolaroa upazila, said he has been cultivating various varieties of jujube for the last 10 years. This year he cultivated the Narkel and Apelkul varieties. Tahazzot Ali, another farmer of the village, said he has cultivated the Misti and Ninetykul.

Jujubes are selling in different areas of the district town at Tk 100-150 (€1.05-1.58) per kg.

According to the Department of Agricultural Expansion (DAE), various types of jujube were cultivated on around 620 hectares of land in the district.
