Onion prices in Nagpur’s Kalamna market have dropped to a remarkable level owing to bumper yields. Sources said that the land under onion cultivation has increased this season and climatic conditions have also been favourable.
The supply from the onion growing areas has increased in the Kalamna wholesale market, said Jaiprakash Vasani, former President of Kanda Batata Adatiya Association of Nagpur.
He said that Agriculture Produce Market Committee (AMPC) Kalamna is daily witnessing arrivals of 25 trucks laden with onion which is more than expectation.
The onions unloaded in the market are called ‘Pol onions’. They are harvested in October/November and have a rather short shelf life. “This is the one of the reasons that traders in the wholesale market are selling the produce at cheaper rates,” Vasani said. The supply of this Pol onion variety will come to an end in the coming week.
