Early onions, currently being harvested in Emilia-Romagna, are doing well as quality is good, even better than expected.
"Prices are good and, if we consider that yields are high, the gross saleable production is very good. This start of the campaign is characterized by interesting prices, although they will drop a little," explains potato and onion expert Matteo Freddi.
Foreign onions are also available, but wholesalers and retailers prefer the domestic produce.
"First-quality onions have high prices, though attention must be paid to those batches damaged by the rain. Anyway, I purchased an onion that looked good and a couple of days of sunshine have been enough to remove excess humidity."
It is difficult to provide an overall summary of prices, also because many factors determine the value of each single batch. Anyway, at the moment, it is difficult to find a good product sold at less than €0.45/kg.
"One needs to be able to choose suppliers well, with whom to establish a lasting relationship. As a company, we are fortunate enough to work with expert certified businesses operating with the maximum professionalism."
