McDonald’s is set to test its plant-based burger called Plant Lettuce Tomato (PLT) across 28 restaurants in Southwestern Ontario, Canada for 12 weeks.
Made using Beyond Meat’s plant-based patty, the PLT was created by McDonald’s for its restaurant chain and will be available from 30 September.
McDonald’s Global Menu Strategy vice-president Ann Wahlgren said: “McDonald’s has a proud legacy of fun, delicious and craveable food, and now we’re extending that to a test of a juicy, plant-based burger.
“We’ve been working on our recipe and now we’re ready to hear feedback from our customers.”
The PLT is free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives and will be priced at C$6.49 ($4.89) plus tax.
Wahlgren said: “During this test, we’re excited to hear what customers love about the PLT to help our global markets better understand what’s best for their customers.
“This test allows us to learn more about real-world implications of serving the PLT, including customer demand and impact on restaurant operations.”
Last month, Beyond Meat partnered with KFC to test its plant-based chicken for nuggets and boneless wings.
The Beyond Fried Chicken was first tested at a KFC restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia, US.
Since 2009, Beyond Meat has been creating plant-based meat-alternatives and launched several products across the brand’s beef, pork and poultry platforms.
In June, Beyond Meat released the new version of Beyond Burger, the brand’s flagship product, at grocery stores across the US.
The new version of the Beyond Burger patty is the next step forward in the company’s vision of building the ‘Future of Protein’.
