US-based Ruiz Food Products is recalling nearly 55,013lb of frozen, not ready-to-eat (NRTE) breakfast burrito products due to possible foreign matter contamination.
The products contain eggs, sausage and cheese.
According to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the products that are subject to the recall may be contaminated with pieces of plastic.
Products that are being recalled include the 3.38lb Value Pack, containing 12 individually wrapped and the 4.5oz ‘El Monterey Signature Burrito Egg, Sausage & Cheese’.
FSIS has said that Ruiz Food Products manufactured the NRTE breakfast burrito products on 15 October 2019. The recalled products bear the establishment number ‘EST 45694’ printed on the value pack bag and the individual wrappings.
Ruiz Food Products identified the issue after it received three consumer complaints. The complaints said that customers found pieces of white, semi-rigid plastic in the product. The company then notified the FSIS about the problem.
The company had already shipped the NRTE breakfast burrito products to retail locations across the US.
So far, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions as a result of the consumption of these products. The FSIS has said that anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.
The company has urged customers not to consume the products. Instead, they should either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
The FSIS is also concerned that some products may be in restaurant freezers. It has advised restaurants not to serve them.
Last month, Simmons Prepared Foods recalled more than two million pounds of poultry products that may have been contaminated with extraneous materials such as metal. The company identified during its standard food safety and quality checks.
