AFC Packaging is pleased to announce the acceptance of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) 2021 Innovation Award in Food Waste Prevention for its NOW No Waste Technology for fresh produce.

NOW No Waste Technology plastic-free packaging is certified recyclable as tested by Sistema Aticelca 501-19 and the Western Michigan University OCC-E Recyclability Test protocol. “The recognition by SPC of this innovation speaks volumes to the dedication of everyone in the AFC Packaging family, with a special nod to the innovative team at Policarta,” said Chris Lewis, president of AFC.

When packaging fresh produce, controlling humidity and protection from sunlight and UV exposure is important. The NOW No Waste Technology can add surface treatment to control these elements while keeping the recyclability integrity of the paper. The technology allows the paper-based plastic free packaging to be tailored with different surface treatment for the specific item.

“It is not only possible to package effectively with our NOW plastic-free paper—reducing waste through 100 percent recyclability—but also that food waste can be dramatically reduced as well. This is a win-win for the planet,” said Paul Smith, head of global packaging.

“We support so many organic and local farmers and know that supermarkets and larger packers can serve their customers with NOW plastic-free packaging with complete sustainability and no negative impact to food quality,” said Stefano Giusti, VP of global packaging.

“The positive impacts of NOW are massive,” said Mike Baker, chief sales and marketing officer. “The recognition from SPC for this innovation is not for us, but for our collaborators and customers. We want to work with anyone who is driven to a sustainable future for packaging.”
