Sudan has called off the launch of a $1bn sugar plant, delaying the industrial project which was aimed at reducing the country's dependence on sugar imports.

President Omar Hassan al-Bashir was meant to inaugurate the White Nile Sugar Co on 5 April, however, the government delayed the launch citing emergency technical reasons.

Earlier, Sudanese industry minister Abdel-Wahab Mohammed Osman submitted his resignation holding himself responsible for the delay. However, the President refused to accept the resignation, reported state news agency SUNA.

Last month, Sudan said the plant would be opened with an initial annual output of 150,000t that would gradually rise to 450,000t over three years, as part the country of efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in sugar by 2014.

Kenana Sugar is the biggest shareholder of the plant in addition to Sudanese firms and two Egyptian investors.
