FSANZ approves use of new antimicrobial washing agent in food

Core Tip: Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has approved the use of dibromo-dimethylhydantoin (DBDMH) as an antimicrobial washing agent across all food products.
DBDMH, however, is likely to be used to treat meat and poultry, as well as water in ice-making systems for use in poultry processing.

This approval comes after Elanco Animal Health sought FSANZ to approve DBDMH use in food.

In response, FSANZ noted it had conducted the appropriate assessment and found the substance was fit for purpose and posed no public health risks.

DBDMH, when added to water, hydrolyses to form hypobromous acid - an active compound that has antimicrobial activity. Hypobromous acid eliminates bacteria present on the surface of food such as E.coli 0157:H7 and Salmonella.
