"The world market price for container vessels is favourable at the moment, so when an interesting opportunity to buy presented itself we were on board," said Asbjrn Gslason, chief executive of Samskip. "We feel this investment is a good one not in the least as the ships were specifically designed for our needs. We also managed to secure favourable financing, which is a recognition to the company's good and strong position, and reflects the trust we enjoy."
The firm had been chartering the 909 TEI sister ships to sail a weekly route from Reykjavik to Immingham and on to continental Europe, ever since they were built seven years ago. The outright purchase is seen by Samskip representatives in the area as a commitment to the business relationship enjoyed between the Humber and Iceland.
