Maharashtra to ask NDDB to buy 15,000 MT of milk powder from its stock

Core Tip: Maharashtra will request the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to procure 15,000 metric tonnes (MT) of milk powder from its stock of 24,000 MT.
Prithviraj Chavan, the state's chief minister, made this announcement at a meeting with representatives of the state milk producers' action committee, adding that if it purchases the said quantity, the state government wll bear the expenses, estimated to be Rs 15 per kilo.

The organised dairy sector collects approximately 113 lakh litres of milk per day. Out of this, about 36 lakh litres is collected through dairy co-operatives and the rest is collected by government and private parties. The actual sale of milk is estimated to be around 75 lakh litres a day. Ten lakh litres of milk are used to make dairy products, and about 28 lakh litres is used to make milk powder and butter.
