Alphonso mangoes from Konkan have reached the APMC market. The supplies are from groves in the Sindhudurg district. The initial consignment of a few dozen were sold locally for around Rs 3,000 (€39) a dozen.

APMC (Vashi) assistant secretary C.M. Somkuwar said the mangoes arrived at three times, spread over a week in small quantities, and four dozen sold for over Rs15,000.

Kunkeshwar mango orchard owner Arvind Walke: "Over 50 Alphonso mango trees are in our orchard. The first consignment of the season was sent on January 28, followed by two on January 30 and February 2, to APMC market, Vashi. The mangoes, packed in wooden boxes, were sold for around Rs3,000 a dozen."

Walke added that due to changed climatic conditions, mango production was hit this season. "The weather remained wet due to unseasonal rain and wind. Cyclonic storms in the Arabian sea added to the woes. Farmers have to take utmost care this year due to bad weather conditions. More supplies will follow once they are fully grown," he told timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
